Jesus Christ, please can I have this story? The one where Bob sees this kid, drunk and stupid on love, singing on a stage to a girl that’ll never notice, not the way she should. This girl that’ll never treat him right, and it isn’t pity that he feels clawing at his belly, no, it’s bigger than that, stronger, when he sends over another beer and a crooked smile.

It’s never a surprise for him, later, when Arthur taps out a beat to the Smiths, when his voice goes deeper with alcohol and he leans in to sing along. When this foolish, stubborn man curls into him, still just as stupid on love. Only this time Bob can wrap a hand around the back of his neck, can curve his palm around the flush he knows his there, and get a smile in return.
